Local News City of Lawrence recognized by Environmental Protection Agency for its use of green power Published 4 years ago on April 30, 2021 By Matt Collins Editor Share Tweet LAWRENCE, Kan. – The City of Lawrence now ranks among the top 30 local governments for its use of green power. The city announced in a news release this week that that it had made the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Top 30 Local Government list for the first time. Lawrence currently ranks as No. 23 on the list of the largest green power users from the Green Power Partnership. Currently, the city is using nearly 35 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, which represents nearly 98% of its operations’ total power needs, according to the release. In June 2020, the Lawrence City Commission approved the city entering into an agreement with Evergy energy that will have the city sourcing about 98% of its energy from wind for the next 20 years. This move was in alignment with City Ordinance No. 9744, which was passed in March 2020, and set the goal of using 100% clean, renewable energy for electricity in municipal operations by 2025. Jasmin Moore, the city-county sustainability director, said in the release that by committing to sustainability and making the choice to use green power, the city reduces its emissions footprint while also sending a message to other communities that using green power is also a financially responsible choice. Moore said that by switching to renewable energy, the city is projected to save approximately $100,000 per year on electricity bills.
