Governor Kelly signs driver’s license bill

TOPEKA, Kan. – On Friday, Gov. Laura Kelly signed a bill which amends laws related to the renewal of drivers’ licenses and provisions applicable when a drivers’ license has been suspended for failure to comply with a traffic citation.

Under Senate Bill 127, drivers whose license expired after March 12, 2020 and before March 31, 2021, now have until June 30 to renew their license or ID.

If a person’s license was suspended for failure to comply with a traffic citation, they won’t see an extension of the suspension or revocation for any additional time under the bill.

The bill ends the $25 application fee for restricted licenses. It also makes restricted licenses available to more people, including Kansans who have previously been cited for driving on a suspended license.

It also adds commercial driver’s licenses to the driver’s licenses that could be renewed online, except if the CDL has a hazardous materials endorsement, and extend the maximum age for online application for renewal of a driver’s license from less than age 50 to less than age 65
