TOPEKA, Kan. – Cinco De Mayo is approaching, and we think one of the best ways to celebrate is by supporting a local Mexican restaurant, as well as taking time to learn about Mexican culture and heritage.
Cinco De Mayo is celebrated annually on May 5 and commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces on May 5, 1862, in the Battle of Pueblo.
Topeka is home to many Mexican restaurants, so you have plenty to choose from to celebrate. We chose El Mezcal as the place we want to give cheers to the day.
El Mezcal, 511 S.W. Topeka Blvd. and 5301 S.W. 21st St., is a traditional Mexican restaurant that has everything from tacos, burritos and enchiladas to fajitas and quesadillas.
We ordered the fajitas — it can be made with chicken or steak — which is served with a side of tortillas, rice and beans, lettuce and guacamole.
To make it a true festive meal, order a cold beer — may we suggest a Corona with lime?
The entire meal can be purchased for $14.01.
