Local athletes have successful day during track meet at Lawrence High

TOPEKA, Kan. – Plenty of local track and field athletes earned victories during Wednesday’s Little KU meet at Lawrence High School.

Athletes or relay teams from Lawrence High, Free State or Bishop Seabury won 34 events at the meet. Topeka West also competed.

LHS senior Graham Hough won multiple individual races. He placed first in the boys 100-meter run with a time of 11.58, and later won the 200-meter dash in 23.33.

In the field events, senior thrower Dylan Gillespie had two wins for the Lions. He won the boys shot put competition with a throw of 45-11.50 and the boys discus event with 134-10.

LHS senior jumper Ntense Obono also came home with two event victories. He won the long jump competition with a leap of 19-06.00 and cleared a mark of 5-08.00 to win the high jump event.

On the girls side, Lawrence’s Brenna Schwada earned two first-place finishes. She won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.29 and made a leap of 16-06.00 to win the long jump competition.

Free State sophomore Marrah Spriggs, who dealt with an injury to start the season, won both hurdle races. She finished in 17.45 in the 100 hurdles and 50.95 in the 300 hurdles.

Oona Nelson was Bishop Seabury’s lone first-place finisher. She won the girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:31.89. Nelson also took second in the 1,600-meter run, finishing behind Isabelle Pro of Free State.

Both Lawrence and Free State will be back in action next week. FSHS is hosting the two-day Barrier Breakers meet next Thursday and Friday. Boys are slated to compete on the first day, and girls will be in action on the second day.
