FSHS softball defeats Olathe North Free State’s softball team strung together three consecutive multi-run innings for a 9-4 home win over Olathe North Thursday night. The game was a back-and-forth battle for four innings before FSHS (14-1) got things going. The Firebirds scored a total of six runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings — two in each — to eventually pull away. They had 13 hits as a team. Fresh off a multi-homer game on Tuesday, senior shortstop Sara Roszak continued to swing the bat well with three hits in four at-bats. McKenzie Marcum matched her with three hits, including two doubles. Senior Tatum Clopton paced FSHS with three RBIs on two hits, and Robin Todd drove in two RBIs. Kinsey Clopton had a triple, and Free State finished with seven extra-base hits as a team. Tatum Clopton pitched all seven innings, giving up one earned run on four hits. She struck out 14 batters and walked one. FSHS clinched a share of the Sunflower League title with Thursday’s victory, but the team has a chance to earn the crown outright on Monday. Next, Free State will host Olathe Northwest at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Firebirds (10-9) have now lost two games in a row since putting together a five-game win streak. They have scored just one run over the last two outings, and they recorded four hits as a team on Thursday. “We played a really solid team today and didn’t play as well as we would have liked,” FSHS head coach Mike Hill said. “Our young pitchers, Tyler Vigna and Kyle Graves, were bright spots and continue to develop.” Vigna got the start and threw for 3 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits and had one strikeout and one walk. Graves recorded the final two outs of the night, one of which was a strikeout. Maddox Burkitt had two of Free State’s four hits to lead the way offensively. Grant Gregory and Keaton Stramberg each had a base knock. Next, Free State will face Lawrence at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hoglund Ballpark. The busy stretch began with a 4-1 road loss to Shawnee Mission Northwest on Tuesday. In the second half, Campbell Leitch scored Lawrence’s lone goal of the match on a cross from Olivia Platt, which cut the deficit to 2-1 before the hosts pulled away. LHS had another road match against Seaman on Wednesday and lost 2-1. This time around, Platt produced a goal on an assist from Jadyn Wymore. Seaman scored a goal in each half. The Lions (4-9) then lost 4-2 against Olathe East at home on Thursday. Platt and Bella Carter each scored a goal for LHS, and Avery Kingery was credited with one assist. LHS will conclude the week with a road game against Mill Valley at 6:30 p.m. Friday. LHS softball dominates on senior night Lawrence High’s softball team dominated Shawnee Mission East on senior night, winning 20-0 in a game that lasted three innings. Sydney Delfelder, who is Lawrence’s lone senior, had two hits and three runs. Chayse Burghart finished with two hits and three RBIs. Emily Silvers, Layla Harjo and Charlee Burghart each had a hit and an RBI. Maelee Folks had a single and a double to go along with four RBIs. On the pitching side, she earned the win, giving up only one walk and an infield hit and striking out five batters. Lawrence scored 18 runs in the first and never looked back after that. LHS is now 3-11 overall and 3-7 in Sunflower League play. Up next, Lawrence will face Blue Valley Northwest and Mill Valley in a home doubleheader on Monday. Lawrence 20, SME 0 SME 0 0 0 — 0 LHS 18 2 0 — 20 LHS swimmer sets school record Lawrence High senior swimmer Aubrey Fischer made history on Thursday during the preliminaries of the Sunflower League meet at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center. Fischer posted a time of 58.09 in the 100 butterfly, which was good enough to finish in second place as an individual behind Free State’s Lolly Hindmann in the event. Fischer’s time bested the previous school record of 58.15, which was set by Emily Guo during the 2019 season. The top 16 finishers in each swimming event on Thursday will return for the finals, which will take place on Saturday. Divers will compete in prelims and semifinals on Friday.
