Washburn Rural girls sweep 6A regional bowling titles

TOPEKA, Kan. – A week after capturing the Centennial League bowling title, Washburn Rural’s girls added a Class 6A regional title, as well.

Placing three bowlers in the top four and four in the top eight, the Junior Blues ran away with Friday’s regional at Junction City. Rural was the only team to top 3,000 pins, finishing with a total of 3,311 to easily beat runner-up Manhattan, which posted a 2,985.

Mikki Fender led the way for the Junior Blues, falling just short of a 700 series, finishing with a 699. That bested Manhattan’s Jasmine Bridges by 27 pins for the regional crown.

Rural swept the individual titles as Chase Clausing captured the boys title with a 719 series. The Junior Blues fell well short of qualifying as a team, placing eighth with a 3,075.

Fender was backed by Hannah Casto and Kaitlyn Doyal in the girls’ runaway effort. Casto posted a 655 to take third and Doyal had a 638 to finish fourth.

Janae Peoples added an eighth for Rural with a 574.

Manhattan and Junction City captured the other two team berths, while Topeka High’s Majayla Boyd (11th, 555) and Ally Watson (12th, 550) picked up individual state berths.

Clausing won the boys title by 15 pins over Junction City’s Jessup Ray, who had a 704. They were the only bowlers over 700.

Topeka High’s Alec Granger finished seventh with a 646 and qualified for state individually.

Wichita Heights won the boys title with a 3,379, while Free State (3,287) and Junction City (3,268) finished second and third, respectively, to earn state berths as teams.
