TOPEKA, Kan. – Topeka police are investigating what they call the “suspicious death” of a person found fatally shot early Wednesday morning in southeast Topeka.

The deceased has been identified as James E. Anderson, 19, of Topeka, said Gretchen Spiker, public relations specialist for the Topeka Police Department.

Police Lt. Jerry Monasmith said officers were called about 12:18 a.m. to the 2300 block of S.E. Bellview Ave., where they found a victim who appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim died after being taken to a Topeka hospital, he said.

Bellview is about six blocks east of S.E. California Avenue.

The death hasn’t been classified a homicide at this point. If it were, it would become Topeka’s first homicide this year.

Monasmith asked anyone with information regarding the death to email [email protected]; call the Topeka police criminal investigation bureau at 785-368-9400; or submit a tip anonymously by calling Shawnee County Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007 or going anonymously to www.p3tips.com/128.
